Breasticles in Bahrain

Bahrain who knew 001 Who would have thunk it?

Hubs and I went to the Bahrain National Museum. I was looking forward to learning more of the history of the area...more about the pearl diving for which they are known..more about the culture, customs and crafts.

I certainly wasn't dissapointed. I learned all of these things and more!

What I definitely did NOT expect to see anywhere in Bahrain - much less on display in a museum - were boobs!

But here they are!

Bahrain christmas eve apron Bahrain Museum 089  As we left the museum, we popped into this gallery on our right...and a few paintings down the row, there it was - a breasticle!

Imagine my shock - not at the display of the human form. (After all, there's plenty of boobages on this site.)

My shock is that this would be permitted in a country where the women are typically covered head to toe. (The Bahraini women do not have to veil or cover, but it seems the norm, and I have only seen the Saudi women with their faces covered...ie they cover all but the eyes.)

So, not only is there a boob here - there are also legs (gasp) and arms (fan me!).

From what I can see...there's no hair exposed...hee hee (none on the head...or elsewhere).

In fact, I don't think this gal has hair.

I would include the artist and the name but didn't see either. (I  was busy trying to snap a shot of the picture without getting into trouble.) - Pictures were allowed in the museum, but I didn't want to have to explain taking a picture of this particular painting.

Or this one...

Bahrain christmas eve apron Bahrain Museum 090 This one was around the corner on the other side - same gallery.

In this painting, there are TWO boobs. (I wish I could add an audible "ah ah ah" there at the end. Anyone else a fan of The Count from Sesame Street...two boobs...ah ah ah!)

This painting reminds me of a Dali...the object to the right looks like "guts" or intestines. There's a foot poking out from underneath the "intestine" area.

The painting has a "garden of Eden"-ish feel to me. That's what it brings to mind.

I like the fuller hips on both the women in these paintings...and am rather curious how these paintings got posted in the museum.

I know Bahrain is pretty liberal comparitively, but to have blatent boobs seems extreme for their culture.

Nice paintings, nonetheless.

A more interesting question would be, "Were these paintings done by memory - or model?"

Hmmmm.

The only place I think one could get nude models here would be the prostitutes that are apparently abundant - you just have to know where to go...or from what I saw, I guess they approach random women in the grocery store! Read about that incident here...guy thought I was a Russian prostitute.)

I'm off to get a shwarma...It's 11:30 Bahrain time. (They are 8 hours ahead of the East Coast. I'm writing this at 3:30 am EST.)

All the breast!

Niki de Saint Phalle

San diego sept 08 062 I first found Nikki de Saint Phalle's work at the Mingei Museum in San Diego...and I fell in love!

They have her work outside the museum - an alligator and one of the "Nanas" - a series of voluptuous female figures. She did quite a few of these fabulous, fun female figures. (The word "nana" is a French word for "babes" or chick.)

I especially love the Nanas because they are wonderfully playful and full of hope and brightness.

I also like them because of the boobs ...this one has a flower on one boob and a heart on the other.

I adore mosaics and Niki's are so full of life.

I love Niki's story because she was successful as an artist even though she wasn't trained.

Just goes to show what you can accomplish if you just do what you love.

If I remember correctly, she started making these for her kids. (Could be wrong about that.)

The point is, these sculptures are so full of joy and life...I love being around them. I always go to see them when I'm in San Diego. (The Mingei is in Balboa Park...and always worth a visit. It's an amazing folk art museum.)

When I was in St. Louis in July to see my hubs, I couldn't believe my luck. We planned to go to the Missouri Botanical Garden - we had heard it's amazing...and it is!

Guess what the special exhibit was while we were there?

Yep, they had an amazing collection of Niki's sculptures. I couldn't believe my luck! I was in heaven. These sculptures take me to my happy place.

I love them because they show the beauty of the female form and show the figures seeming to take delight in the fullness of their "femaleness". These sculptures illustrate the joyfully divine feminine - full of creativity and life and power.

Go to the wikipedia page on Niki to see even more...when I get to it, I'll put some pictures in a photo album so you can see some of the other sculptures.

Here's another photo of a Nana for now...

Double D Rose

San diego sept 08 029 Is that the most beautful flower??

...I say that about every flower, every rose. They are all beautiful.

We can be a lot happier when we feel the same way about all of our experiences...that they all have beauty and goodness in them, even if we can't see it. And, when we can't see the goodness, the call is to step out anyway in trust and gratitude that the goodness is there.

I loved this one especially because of the name.

I met hubs in San Diego in September. We went to the Rose Garden in Balboa Park. We always have liked going there, but we went this time to honor his Aunt Pam who had just passed away. She, too, lived in San Diego at one point, and she would help out in the Rose Garden...when she wasn't tending to her own gorgeous roses.

She was a huge help to me in facing cancer...she had beat it 17 years before, and her attitude, grace and gratitude were a model for everyone.

Her beauty was as evident as this rose's.

Just FYI...it's name really is "Double D"...it shall be a new "booby mascot".

Boobs Really Are Everywhere

IMG_3065 I was flipping back through some pictures, and I can't believe I missed this...I was looking at pictures from mine and mom's Alaska cruise last year.

And what did I see...smack in the middle of the main foyer area of the ship??

Boobs!

You can click the image to see it larger...at least I think you can. (They're mermaids - appropriate for a ship - and of course, since they are mermaids, they must be topless.)

Maybe I was still "under the influence" of drugs a bit, maybe that's why I didn't particularly notice these boobies...but I was 6 weeks out from my surgery when we went on the cruise. So, no drugs.

(I know I was definitely still TIRED and EXHAUSTED all the time...it's bad when you're with a 70-something year old, and YOU're the one who needs the nap! That was me on the cruise.) I'd get to the point in the afternoon where I just couldn't wiggle.

So, give yourself time to heal. No need to rush any longer...what did that ever accomplish anyway?

Know that it can take a year or better to get your energy back.

The upside is that now I'm much more respectful of my energy levels and much more aware of where they really are...and I'm completely unashamed if I need a nap.

Beautiful, (slightly) droopy boobs

St_louis_art_museum_039 Here's the first installation in the boobs from the St. Louis Museum of Art. It has me wondering...what's the difference between this and something lude? (I think on a visceral level, we know the difference. It's an instinctive reaction based on how we were raised.)

My question is more along the lines of how is it that we can have boobs all over an art museum and people are appalled at a woman breastfeeding? Granted, even I think they should have one of those covers.

I just think it would be interesting to trace the booby boundaries...what's acceptable and what's not - not only that but also WHY? As in, why are certain things acceptable and others not.

I learned that when they did the article in the ProJo last year, there was a big discussion about using the word boob or breast in the title or subtitle of the article. If you'll notice, it doesn't say "breast cancer", just "cancer.

I really don't care one way or the other. Just an interesting note.

I like this painting because the boobs are realistic. They're a little droopy and point downward and to the side instead of the idealized boobs with nipples that point straight ahead.

"Natural" Boobs

Img_2979 This is "Booby Mountain". Cool, yes?

I took this shot in Anchorage, Alaska. The friends we stayed with told me about it...they actually live in the shadow of Booby Mountain.  Grin

Nice nipple, don't you think?

This gives new meaning to the term "Mother Earth".
